Environmental Health

Animal Bites 

  • Investigate reports of human exposures to dogs, cats, bats, ferrets and other wild animals for the risk of rabies.
  • Work closely with animal control agencies regarding animal exposures.

Insect & Rodent Info

  • Staff provides consultation regarding mosquitoes, ticks, fleas and bats for the general public.
  • Educate about the risks of emerging animal-carried and insect-carried diseases and methods to reduce the risk.

Drinking Water

  • Monitor drinking water of public water systems for water for bacteria and nitrates.
  • Provide bacteria and nitrate testing for private well owners.
  • Conduct water evaluations of private wells for home loans and property sales.
  • Conduct sanitary surveys for public water systems.

Water Recreation / Pool Inspections

  • Protects public health by working with owners and operators of public and semi-public water recreation facilities to prevent drowning, illnesses and injuries.
  • Response to public health or safety concerns regarding permitted facilities.
  • Conducts yearly evaluations of all public and semi-public swimming pool

Food Service Establishments

  • Conduct yearly evaluations of all Food Service Establishments.
  • Consult with the public on how to open a food service establishment
  • Conduct Pre-Operational inspections to assure compliance with state and local laws
  • Consult with event organizers/vendors on safe food handling for seasonal events
  • Conduct evaluations of the concession stand of larger seasonal events ( Balloon Stampede, 4th of July in the Park and the Farmers Market)  

School Inspections

  • Conduct plan review for all construction for public and private schools kindergarten through high school grade 12.
  • Conduct Pre-Operational inspections to assure compliance with state and local laws

Illegal Drug Labs

  • Respond to methamphetamine labs located by law enforcement.
  • Post, “No Entry Notices due to Chemical Contamination.”

Septic Systems

  • Review home site plans to ensure proper sizing, installation, operation and maintenance of on-site sewage systems.
  • Conduct post installation inspections to assure compliance with state and local laws
  • Respond to complaints about failing on-site systems.
  • Providing technical assistance to homeowners.
  • Evaluate on-site systems on request for home sales or mortgage loans.
  • Review proposed subdivisions to determine suitability of proposed lots for the installation of on-site sewage systems.

Indoor Air Quality

  • Provide information and act as a resource to customers in order to improve indoor air quality.

Solid Waste

  • Issue permits and conduct inspections of permitted solid waste facilities for compliance with state and local laws.
  • Investigate complaints that pertain to illegal disposal of solid waste.

Children with Special Health Care Needs 

  • Families of children with special health care needs have access to a Public Health Nurse for care coordination. The Public Health Nurse can assess the children's and family's needs, help plan for medical care and assist in finding resources and obtaining services. The Public Health Nurse can meet the family in their home or other location, or consult over the phone if that is preferred. There is no financial eligibility requirement for these services and there is no charge. To be eligible for this service, children must be under the age of 18 and with a condition that may prevent them from growing, developing and playing like other children; or places them at risk of becoming disabled.
