HISTORY OF WALLA WALLA CO. SHERIFF’S OFFICE

1859 – January 19th – Creation of Walla Walla County Government. Offices

              were appointed by Legislature. Appointed Sheriff, Edward D. Pearce.

1859 - March15th – Walla Walla Commissioners appointed Sheriff, Lycurgus

            Jackson.

1860 - July – First County Election held. James A. Buckley, Sheriff. (At this time,

             prisoners still being housed at Fort Vancouver)

1860 – November 5th – James A. Buckley also appointed to serve as Assessor.

             (On November 8th Contract awarded to build 1st County Jail at a cost of

             $3,350.00. Lasted until 1881 when it was torn down)

1862 – July 14th – James A. Buckley reelected Sheriff. In February, 1863 , he

              resigned, on February 7th Isaac L Roberts, appointed. He resigned on

              March 17th, and E.B. Whitman was appointed.

1863 – July 13th – W.S. Gilliam,  elected Sheriff.

1865 – June 5th – A. Seitel, elected Sheriff. ( On August 3rd a fire destroyed

              most County records)

1867 – June 3rd A. Seitel, reelected Sheriff.

1868 – A. Seitel resigned, James McAuliff,  former County Treasurer appointed.

1869 – James McAuliff reelected Sheriff.

1870 – June 6th – County Elections held a year early, McAuliff reelected Sheriff.

1872 – County Elections, B.W. Griffin, Also voted in was construction of County

             Court House and Jail.

1874 – November 3rd – George F. Thomas , elected Sheriff. New Court House

             constructed, jail was 12 cells in basement.

1876 – November 7th – G. Thomas, re-elected Sheriff.

1878 – November 5th – J.B. Thompson, elected Sheriff.

1880 – November 2nd – J. B. Thompson reelected Sheriff.

1882 – J. B. Thompson reelected.

1884 – A.S. Bowles, elected Sheriff.

1886 – A. S. Bowles, reelected Sheriff.  

1888 – J.M. McFarland, elected Sheriff. (1889 Washington Received Statehood)

1890 – J. M. McFarland reelected.

1892 – C.C. Gose, elected Sheriff.

1894 – William Ellingsworth, elected Sheriff. Served to 1899.

1898 – A. Frank Kees, elected Sheriff. Served to 1903.

1902 – Charles S. Painter, elected Sheriff. Served to 1907

1906 – J.S. Haviland, elected Sheriff. Served to 1911.

1910 – M. Toner, elected Sheriff. Served to 1915.

1914 – Lee Barnes, elected Sheriff. Served to 1919.

1918 – David Yates, elected Sheriff. Served to 1921.

1920 – Charles J. Springer, elected Sheriff. Served to 1927.

1926 – Earl K. McInroe, Served to 1935.

1934 – C.A. Woodward, elected Sheriff. Served to 1943.

1942 – A.A. Shick, elected Sheriff. Served to 1951.

1951 – John R. Cummins, elected Sheriff. Served to 1963.

1962 – Arthur Klundt, elected Sheriff. Served to 1977.

1976 – Ronald E. Kespohl, elected Sheriff. Served to 1982.

1983 – Kenneth Klundt, elected Sheriff. Served to 1986.

1987 – Bill H. Jackson, elected Sheriff. Served to 1997.

1998 – J. Michael Humphreys, elected Sheriff. Served to 2010.

2011 – John A. Turner, elected Sheriff. Currently fulfilling term.
